The 4C's: What Really Matters in Your Diamond
Choosing a diamond is more than just picking a carat weight. The 4C's—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—work together to define its beauty and value. Each plays a role, but some matter more than others.
When a gemologist inspects a diamond, they focus on specific values—depth percentage, table size, crown angles, and symmetry—all of which determine how light moves through the stone. Too shallow, and light leaks out of the bottom. Too deep, and it escapes through the sides.
For round diamonds, look for Excellent or Ideal cuts, as these maximize brilliance. Fancy shapes, like ovals or emerald cuts, have different proportions, so their ideal measurements vary. No matter the shape, a well-cut diamond will always outshine a poorly cut one.

One overlooked factor? Fluorescence. Diamonds with medium to strong fluorescence may look whiter than their grade suggests, especially in natural sunlight. A well-chosen H or I color diamond with fluorescence can look as bright as a D-F diamond while costing much less.

but here's the secret: most inclusions are microscopic.

Internally Flawless (IF)
diamonds are exceptionally rare and command high premiums.

(Very, Very Slightly Included)
Inclusions are almost impossible to spot even under 10x magnification.

(Very Slightly Included)
Inclusions are minor and almost always invisible to the naked eye.

(Slightly Included)
Some inclusions may be visible without magnification, but a well-selected SI1 can still appear eye-clean.

(Included)
Inclusions are visible and can impact durability.
A diamond's carat weight is determined by its size, with larger diamonds weighing more. However, it's important to note that carat weight is not the same as size, as other factors such as depth and shape can also impact how large a diamond appears.
